@Lemak: You answered your own question: Each instant and sorcery you've played this turn would work. Excepting Storm combos, it wouldn't be as degenerate compared to the others. Or add {R} for each point of damage done to an opponent this turn.

Consider that this is a land capable of dealing damage to multiple enemy players and there are few lands which can do this. Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle requires you to have 5 mountains down AND drop a land card for it to activate, making it much harder to activate. Shivan Gorge, however, works more often and has great synergy with Chandra's Spitfire.
See also Keldon Megaliths for similar usage (cheap and great if you're out of cards).

A little slow in one on one and it'll make you the enemy in multiplayer. Still it's a land that does damage 3.5/5

Comparing with Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle is not fair regarding difference in time and block in which those 2 lands were printed. However even if you insist on comparing, althought most of time, Valakut is better, there are also situations where Shivan Gorge is better. Consider multiplayer combo with Chandra's Spitfire. Lets say playing 3 vs 3 multiplayer, it gives 3 damage total to opponents and boosts Spitfire with +9. Valakut can not do it.

Uncounterable, repeatable, colorless damage?
That's pretty darn good.
Sure it's absolute drek compared to Tolarian Academy, Gaea's Cradle, and Serra's Sanctum, but those cards are an abomination of common sense, restraint, and fairness.

Shivan Gorge
n. (Shih-vun GORJ)
1. A land from Urza's Saga that could produce colourless mana or deal damage to all opponents for three mana.
2. The wound, or "gorge," left by injury from a shiv.

This in no way stacks up with Serra's Sanctum, Tolarian Academy or Gaea's Cradle.... such a shame, could have been a really cool cycle of lands, but it is true that any red land adding more than one mana would have been quite the game-ender throughout magic. But this just sucks.
