i want to see more masticores. pretty good body, discard disadvantage, gun down creatures, cheap, extra bonus goodie (first strike here)
they'd better reprint this in scars of mirrodin!

Put a Loxdon Warhammer on this thing and it's really annoying, 3 life every turn for a discard, and then 8 if you attack. Plus they have to block with a 5/9 minimum or a creature with 5/X and first strike. It's very bothersome to get rid of without arti-hate.

You discard a card and deal 3 damage... that sounds an awful lot like Lightning Bolt, one of the best cards in the game. Except this one is free, and coloress.
So you get free Lightning Bolts and a 5/5 first striker for 5 mana IN ANY COLOR?
Call me crazy, but that's a faaaantastic card.

ah yes, the last ability is in the draw step instead of upkeep so that the defending player has a chance to make you discard a card uselessly as he destroys it before you can deal dmg

Draw step for the last ability? Why not just always the upkeep?
But yeah, I love this card, I've always felt like it deserved to be the finisher in those controlling decks over stuff like serra angel.
