Goblin King gives viability to Goblin Decks. He gives them a much needed power/toughness boost and decent evasion (although arguably not as good as that granted by Lord of Atlantis). Use with Blood Moon to make your goblins unblockable. It's interesting to look at the changes Goblin King went through during his many years. From Alpha through Unlimited, Goblin King was a 3/3 mountainwalker. Revised cut his power level significantly by making him creature type "lord" instead of a goblin. In 9th, some of his former glory was restored as he once again became a goblin, but now only boosted OTHER goblins. So at least multiple Goblin Kings in play affect each other.

It took WotC until Revised to correct a mis-typeing from Alpha.
