It took Tireless Missionaries for this to look good. It goes to show - all you need to do is subtract 1 from each number on the card...

Obviously it was too hard for them to subtract a 1 from the CMC.
Oh well. I always thought these guys were fairly average, rather than bad.

Pair this with Man-o'-War or Shrieking Drake and you can cast again for 4 life... Or use Equilibrium.

By the way, would this card combo with a phasing card like Teferi's Curse, giving you 4 life every time Staunch Defender phases back into play?

keeds4, phasing doesn't trigger "enters the battlefield" or "leaves the battlefield" effects.
