It certainly has it's uses, not in Mono Red Aggro certainly but it's an awful lot to get around for RR1
As for the Color Pie, when this one was dreamed up Richard Garfield and friends were still running Wizards out of a rented basement, much less worrying about how this would fit in with the 20th expansion set.
Remember when this one was dreamed up Lightning Bolt, Fireball and Disintegrate were all very readily available, and a common Red strategy was to sit behind a wall of stone and burn your opponent
Respect it for being a classic even if it doesn't fit modern decks very well

This was one of the stars of my Red Deck Loses deck, which played big walls early and then cast expensive burn spells later. Ember shot!
