Yes, because he keeps the research private, you get your hands on it only after he's dead.

There's some back-story between Private Research and this guy.

So what's the flavor explanation on this one? You make your creature conduct research that becomes available to you once it dies?

If the creature dies immediately you'll be left with card disadvantage.
This card gets advantageous after waiting two turns at first. It might provide a lot of cards and is a one-drop aura afterall, but i'd prefer using the green alternative of this, Bequeathal.
But keep in mind regarding both of them:
When the enchantment gets destroyed you won't get any cards, and if the creature gets exiled (e.g. with Swords to Plowshares) you won't get them either.

If i were playing Blue/Red or Blue/black, id put this on their first or second turn guy. Once with enuff counters, u just have to bolt it :D

Note that you can place this card on an opponent's creature, then kill it yourself. That is, in fact, generally a better option -- if you place it on your creature, your opponent is going to (if possible) kill it quickly to prevent you from getting too many cards (possibly even a two-for-one).
But if you put it on their creature, it puts them in a quandary -- they can't kill it themselves without at least breaking even with you and probably giving you a two-for-one (because they'll likely have to waste a card killing it.) Plus it's only one mana, so forcing them to kill their creature even by chump-blocking with it is not bad. More likely they'll be forced to wait a while, at which point you can kill the creature with removal and get a bunch of cards.
