In my early days, I once took 20 damage from a single wanderlust. I had an unhealthy view of this card's power for years afterwards.

Flavor right here:
The forests are so overgrown, you opponent loses himself (or herself) in them. The journey through is so exhausting, it slowly wears him down.

Regarding flavor, assuming that BastianQoU's explanation is correct, it would have made more sense if the creature took damage (or got -1/-1 counters, but that didn't exist in Alpha.) But then again this would make it a pretty lousy Aura.
But since it enchants the creature, it's the creature which has Wanderlust. Which means we have to assume some kind of empathic connection between the player and his creatures.
Otherwise the card type could have been changed to 'fix the flavor': as enchant player, and then (since it's exhausting, and you're not walking through needles or something) it could have made the player lose 1 life instead, like its (somewhat timeshifted and color pie fixed) new version Soul Bleed does.
