I love it when flavor text suggests possible uses for a card. You could engage in combat, and then sacrifice him upon defeat to convert colorless mana to red and cast Fireball. Even though he's outclassed in modern Magic, this card was one of the first that inspired me to build a deck that splashed colors rather than to commit to a second. I used to run a deck with red spells with no Mountains using these guys as a mana filter to convert my blue mana to red to cast a surprise XR spell when the opponent wasn't ready for it.

This was made so that every deck could cast Ball Lightning. This was revealed in one of the arcana articles.

Kinda useless since you have to spend 3 to get RRR, but he was at least an interesting and flavorful concept for the time.
