Actually, Reverse Damage made it very playable... I had a R/W deck that did mass damage to all creatures and players, this to redirect all the damage without changing the one source to me, then a Reverse Damage. :)

while the card itself is dismal, this remains one of the most intruguing and amazing pieces of art in magic history. Its always stuck with me since the first time I cracked it in a booster.

Horrible card, but interesting concept and powerful artwork. Had it cost W, it might have seen some play since you could, in theory, save a whole pile of creatures by only redirecting a point or two from each to yourself.
