I love the flavor, reminds me of Varchild's War-Riders from the same set. There has got to be a way to use the deserters to your favor though. hand of justice perhaps?

Ahh, the Kjeldorans... I don't know why they deserted a lot, but I do know the name and I like the flavor.

Shouldn't the deserter token go to your opponent?

Old cards were clunky and mostly unplayable like this.... but they tell a story like nothing else. Who were the Kjeldorans? Why does its home guard have such a high desertion rate? Few cards nowadays make you care a lot about the organisation of Bant society or the reason why Bloodbraid Elf lets you play spells for free.

sadly the tokens aren't any creature type - otherwise it could have been used with Catapult Master

So when the home guards run away to become Deserters, they are no longer humans? Go figure.
Works pretty well with boosts like Honor of the Pure and Crusade though.

Would be pretty neat with Cathars' Crusade, I suppose. Put a 1/1 token into play, that then gives all your creatures a +1/1 counter, and then it becomes a 2/2 from the counter itself. Plus, this Home Guard gets a buff, with added power. Allowing for even more tokens! ....Slow combo, but I'd use some removal on it.
Actually, it curves into the Enchantment quite nicely. The more you know!

This card is great with Attrition for tons of card advantage, especially with the cards listed below.
@Kserwin
Add World at War to speed it up a bunch. Aurelia, the Warleader would also help a lot.
