the giant badass shield explains 3 toughness but the sword isnt even worth 1?

The difference is that Valiant Guard has a more relevant creature type than Kraken Hatchling, which, in my opinion, makes it just as good.

Not strictly worse than the walker, as he is a soldier, but no one in there right mind would run this as there one drop in a soldier deck, too many better options.

love playing this in my black/white deck. with her its completely common to be able to have a 3/5 by your 3rd or 4th turn. forces your opponents to waste a counter or creature killer on a measley 1 drop early in the game.

keep in mind that it doesn't have defender.
i think the designers kept something in mind when creating this card.
i guess the trick behind this guy is using it along with the Exhalted ability often found in this block.
