Giant Spider is considered to be the penultimate card of limited play. It's a creature, which is its first plus, and it has the ability to be an attacker, block random dudes, block dudes with evasion, and at the same time dodge direct damage removal like lightning bolt. He's not very intimidating to new players, or veterans, and has almost no place in tournament staple decks, but he hits every single target you'd set for a creature in draft, sealed, or other forms of limited play.

I'd rather use Canopy spider, which is 1/3, because it costs 2 mana less.

I'd rather have a Deadly Recluse on my side, because that tiny little bugger can kill a rampaging Krosan Cloudscraper or Leviathan instantaneously, and at a discount. But all in all, the Giant Spider is useful in the right place at the right time. 3.5/5.

I could see using this in a Spider-deck, or maybe a Reach-deck, but not much else. It's good because it can block fliers, but that's really it. 3.5/5

Latest word from Wizards is that the spider will be in Magic 2011. Making it one of only two cards that will have been in every core set from Alpha to 2011. Interestingly, the other card both has "Giant" as the first word in it's name, and is green.

Azure Drake is a better limited card. Like the spider its amazing early defense and unlike the spider it has evasion for the same body and cost so it can swing later on if need be
