Blightning is better, no doubt(if you're really playing Red Black). Stupor is better(in MBC.) But if you only want to limit your opponents hand, this is great too. 2nd turn Hymn to Tourach then 3rd This, that's too much headache for your opponent.

Saw somebody use this in a draft yesterday, both BG big creature decks. The board was completely blocked up with giant creatures, and the guy who ended up winning used this to make the loser discard his Overrun and Giant Growth.

Mana Curve: 1 mana Funeral Charm, 2 mana Ravenous Rats, 3 mana Mind Rot. There is beauty in this particular mana curve that WotC thankfully has not messed with through out the years.

@Dragonlord: Your reasoning is flawed. Most of the cards you compare this to are multi-colored. Wrench Mind is only slightly better and has a double black mana cost along with a possible drawback. Delerium Skeins is only better if you're doing Madness or Hellbent. Hymn to Tourach is universally agreed to be overpowered, which is why they've never printed anything close to it in the last 10 years, and probably never will. And don't get me started on Blightning...
This is an extremely balanced card. In older decks it can still be played on the first turn with a Dark Ritual, and it fits into any multicolor deck using black.

I think savage brain meant that this card is "way better" because if you prefer mono black then you can't use blightning. Obviously if you can splash red blightning is way better, but I think that card is undercosted anyway (same CMC as this card plus a free lightning bolt? the one R in the cost doesn't make it that much harder to play).
This card is perfect. If it did anything more for it's cost it'd be overpowered; as is it's balanced and is a nice way of making players drop cards. I always like to see their bigger bombs hit the graveyard when I play this on turn three and know that if the game makes it to turn 7 and I haven't won yet I'm not going to see them come back with their win condition.

For you 2010ers, nice combo with Megrim and Sign in Blood. Very fun in mono-black, only problem is don't try the combo if they have mana up, instants can screw with your combo.

If you're wanting a B discard, splash in the red, give them some draw with Sign in Blood, Howling Mine, or Font of Mythos, then toss in your Underworld Dreams since you're pumping their hand up with some Megrim to trim. Then use your Blightning to nail them for 7 with the megrim, making sure they'll have a hand. Sure, there is definitely room for this card in discard, but if you're wanting to use Megrim to burn them as they discard, Burning Inquiry is infinitely better, it ensures they will have cards in hand, only costs 1 mana, and discards an extra. It will do 2 more damage, and only 1 less than Blightning.
If anyone likes the deck idea, Chandra Ablaze and Liliana Vess to taste.
And for everyone crying about Blightning being undercosted, it doesn't tag on a lightning bolt. Th... (see all)
