Cute and somewhat powerful. Good in limited. I love the way he can't really control his powers yet, and dies if he tries too hard. Definitely a more enjoyable card than Furnace Whelp.

This is a decent red card that's been around since the beginning. Medium size creature + flying + firebreathing for 4 mana ? I'll play with one of these ! 4/5

Old school and still solid. The real beauty of this guy is that you can "flame him out" for a big hit if the opportunity presents itself. I lost many games to my buddies back in the day against this one.

3.5/5

I hate how they said that From the Vaults: Dragons was going to be 15 rare foils. Then they added this which had been elevated to pseudo-rare status with the Timeshifted set, but it didn't really feel like a rare. Then they go ahead and print this thing again at uncommon.

Curse Wizards' bizarre marketing.

Love this little guy. How often do you get a 5 power flyer for 4 mana? Not to mention you can pump him as much as you want when you swing for the kill. I think the 1 extra toughness is worth the limitation over Furnace Whelp. Even though it doesn't matter as much anymore since Lightning Bolt has replaced Shock, there are a lot of 2-power flyers in Zendikar block, and you would rarely sink that much mana into pumping him anyway.

Erik's Random card 6/21/2011

The design team had Furnace Whelp in this slot. Furnace Whelp has less text, simpler rules, and had excellent art. They considered Dragon Whelp, but went with Furnace Whelp. Development changed it to Dragon Whelp. Why?

"Dragon" in the name is a nice start for the uncommon "Dragon" slot in the core set. The rules of the Dragon Whelp tell an adorable story of the baby dragon who breaths fire, but if breaths too hard it pops. The story also helps teach newer players a detail of the rules.

There are a lot of rules in Magic, and people get some wrong. That is fine, as long as they are having fun. But it is nice if the game helps coach them the rules so when they go outside their social circle, they are still playing the same game. It may not be obvious to a new player that you can activate the Furnace Whelp ability more than once per turn. But the Dragon Whelp talks about activating more than three times in a turn; it gets the point that "you can ac... (see all)

It's still a pretty decent uncommon. A lot of the uncommons in M10 have been really powerful and this one is no exception. A flying firebreathing monster really dominates in limited play and he's got good toughness for a red creature...

At any rate, you could do a lot worse with 4 mana in a red deck...

This isn't completely obsolete by rakdos pit dragon, since you need hellbent for rakdos to win. Otherwise this is generally better.

Of course in a red deck it's pretty easy to be hellbent, but just saying...
