I played in Limited against one of these plus a Coralhelm Commander. I was sitting pretty at 17 life, but the next turn the Commander got some level counters (giving it flying and also growing the Drake) and in two combats I was at 1 life, reeling with hurt and wondering where the heck my life total had gone. If you can get a decent amount of levelers in your draft or sealed pool, then this guy amounts to a leveler who levels for free. Don't let him surprise you.

It will be a deceptive 2-drop, that's for sure. With Venerated Teacher coming down on turn 3 or 4 and a 1-drop Enclave Cryptologist, you've suddenly got a huge threat on your side of the field.

Unbelievably good in Limited if your pool has even one Venerated Teacher. Even a 1/1 flier for 2 is a decent-late pick, but lategame having it be 4/4 for 2 is great on the manabase when you want to sink most of your mana into making your levelers better, and he just fits right in because he's allowing you to do that to make him better. Great card in Limited.

This card isn't so awesome. Even in limited, it takes time to level your creatures. So it rather negate some speed-disadvantage when used with leveler creatures... but still not quite good.

But I will try this card in a monoblue pauper deck.

This card has a very neat design regarding both flavor and functionality.
And it's not that bad either in a leveler deck, a potential 4/4 flyer for two mana is pretty good - since it only requires one blue mana, it can also find space in a Blue/White-leveler deck or the like as well.
