But you could think of it as the souls being forced /out/ of the bodies, or /in/ to the bodies, in order to make them into zombies.

Why does the art not show zombies? If this card made Spirit tokens, the art would fit. If it drew cards, the art would fit. If it discarded cards, drained life, gave you life, returned cards from your graveyard to your library, or did any of a number of things apart from what it did, the art would fit.

Maybe the art is depicting spirit zombies, from when you exile zombies from your graveyard?
