A lot more viable now that his buddy, Bojuka Brigand, is here to provide some numbers. Still though, for 4CC he is passable at best.

Allies are like slivers. There aren't any bad ones. Maybe I'd rather run Oran-Rief Survivalist, but if I was making a red/black ally deck, this would be in it. Ultimately, triggering 4 ally affects for 3 is perfectly acceptable.

I'll much rather play the green alternative instead.
On the other hand, it's a single-black costed 3/3 black creature for four mana (or just call it a black Hill Giant) which can still grow, which isn't seen that often, though.

All the allies are great in sealed if you get enough of them. In constructed I find it tough to keep too many critters on the board at the same time.

So black is worse at allies than green (Oran-Rief Survivalist) but slightly better than red (Tuktuk Grunts). Haste makes the comparison tough. But it's just good to know where you stand, you know?
Thing is, he's still pretty good!

A bit too basic for my liking, as he gets outdone by the allies with nice abilities. Not bad though. More swell sword than sellsword.
