Masques has just a few too many 4/4s for 4 mana with a drawback....

Shouldn't it be a mercenary as well?

Think Emperor matches.

Yeah... Emperor is this card's only real playable format. But if you drop it as the emperor, you can rampant growth for your whole team. That's kinda cool.

Wow it doesn't even have to be a basic land...think of the possibilities. Run it with dryad sophisticate! No, still not worth it. I actually am drawn to undercosted creatures with drawbacks, but there are more interesting ones out there than this guy.

If they're going to persuade us to play a creature with that effect they could at least make it more powerful than what other colors consider bad for the same cost. I mean even if they didn't make the card stronger they could've made it look impressive.

Nice mana acceleration! Too bad it accelerates everyone elses instead of yours. Dirtcowl Wurm makes an attempt at saving this awful effect, but the ruling text below says that a spell or ability land-drop doesn't count. Unless a passive effect like this doesn't count as an 'ability'?
Anyway, it's just not a good monster. One of the more painful down sides I've seen, and it's on a monster with no saving graces to cover for it.

Maybe for a 2cmc the drawback is worth it other than that there's better 4/4s

Play with Dirtcowl Wurm in multiplayer.
