I'm surprised that no one here has picked up on, or has at least commented about, the obvious Lovecraft influence with regards to this card.
With the name cosmic horror and it's amorphous disposition this looks like a card depiction of Azathoth, the blind idiot god, or a shoggoth.
Probably the shoggoth, the blind idiot would surely have to be many times more powerful than a 7/7.
Here's a shoggoth quote, "a shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming." - H.P. Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness.
Doesn't Cosmic Horror fit that de***ion nicely? Why yes.

You could also make him indestructible. There are more ways to do that then there are cards like Eon Hub.

To those who wonder why this card has such a bad drawback, remember the environment when the card was first made. Drawbacks were made on some cards to prevent opponents from taking full advantage of a card. Players with Animate Dead, Resurrection, and Control Magic would have a field day if cards such as Cosmic Horror , Mold Demon, and Force of Nature have no drawbacks. It takes a lot of resources for a mono-colored mage to cast his power card and we don't want them feeling cheated when someone just steals it away from them with nothing to lose. Most people in the earliest days of Magic run only a single color.

Seems more in the Dunwich Horror vein to me...

Don't complain about him, just use him with Eon Hub. It's hard to complain about a black 7/7 First strike for cmc when you take away the drawback.

It has everything to do with Cosmic Horror. You put him out if you need a big combat guy, with the option of paying 6 every turn in dire circumstances. If you decide he's not worth it anymore, you let him die, but awe strike him so you gain 7 life for a single white mana.

Thankfully I never bought this one. But I did buy a playset of Nut Collector....so I guess Im just as ignorant.
Chalk it up to naivety. Something looks good and until you know the game a bit better you dont see how bad it really is.
