Let's see, we have four possibilities on who assigns combat damage and guess what, all are actually possible:
1. Attacking player assigns both damages.
2. Attacking player assigns attackers damage, defending player blockers damage.
3. Attacking player assings blockers damage, defending player attackers damage.
4. Defending player assigns both damages.
2. is normal attack.
1. is an attacking band with no banding blockers.
4. is nonbanding attacker blocked by at least one blocker with banding.
and finally:
3. is when attcking band is blocked by at least one blocker with banding.
Following the rules:
Attacking player assigns attackers damage unless one of the blockers has banding. Defender assigns blockers damage unless they are blocking a band.
Banding is very easy to understand and everybody would understand it if it wasn't discontiuned. It can be brought back and has been by introducing banders in online Masters editions. So WoTC please return banding.

I thought I understood banding for a long, long time, but only recently i've begun to ask myself what happens when both players in a combat have bands of creatures. Who assigns that combat damage if everyone is banding? Baffling to me, that is.
It probably has something to do with turn order or something dull.

Banding is a cool ability which appreciates both technique and skill. All of you guys complaining about banding being so confusing and worthless should go play Candy Land instead of Magic.

(Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding a player controls are blocking or being blocked by a creature, that player divides that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)
And that is how banding works.
