It's an interesting art choice by Wizards here, but those soldiers are blocking a laccolith - a Nemesis creature that cares about being blocked.
As to the card itself - lifegain has been considered "bad" conventionally for a long time, and this is probably a pretty good example of why. For 5 mana, white could probably find better things to do, and as a potential combo piece, it's not very exciting.

Well, idk any combos, but if you happen to have a token deck, you can group block to get some quick life gain.

I think this card needs to be a creature to be worth playing. I don't think this ability is worth five mana alone, i think they could have thrown a 0/5 defender on it as well. Maybe i'm wrong though, i've been playing in a world where baneslayers and phyrexian obliterators can be printed.
