The alternative cost helps for storm. On turn four you could (but maybe shouldn't) get four mana, then sacrifice your four mountains for two of these and the play Empty the Warrens to get 10 gobbos.

Well, goblin trenches is more efficient, in turning lands into goblins. Still, cards that can be played without mana are always worth a second look.

@nubiop zk3 has the exact point. it would be better if this was an instant, because then you can ambush your opponents with goblins. but with the new cheifton 2 mountains isnt that big of a loss if you just tapped out for like a Siege-Gang.
