I like the other art better.

No, the ability itself is good. The problem is the creatures it's attached to aren't.

Why is it a zombie?

Mercenary ability is and was awful, the assassin ability is much worse than Royal assassin's, and the extra P/T is useless as this guy should never attack. Total waste of a rare slot unless you are doing tribal or need extra removal in EDH, and even then there are probably better options.

I agree with pedrolyl. The alternate art from whatever M is is so much better.

Versatile Card.
@jsttu Please do a search with the advanced options to see all the cards with with 1 power this card could block on the first turn for you. Also, please do a search for all the cards that can deal 1 damage to a creature. A prodigal wizard holds a Royal assassin at bay, but not this guy. As others have stated, the mercenary search ability is fantastic, it's the support that is bad. If I'm going to grade a card/ability of a card, I go off it's potential. Unfortunately, one 4 star card (which is what I gave it) doesn't make a good deck when the rest of the cards you'd have to place with it are 1 and 2 star cards. Instead it collects dust until some 3-5 star cards are around to supplement. That's the difference between individual card strength and deck strength.
I'm not saying your comment was outlandish, but it was overly eccentric.

@heenaheena
Well you see, when a necromancer and a corpse love each other very very much...

This card is not that good, but it has its uses.
