Bad, but you can use colorless mana to pay for the creature's cost. so you can play a black creature in a mono-blue deck, and it is uncounterable! but it is still bad, as you have to pay 5 to have this effect...

I really dislike this card. Unless you're playing all color and you have a way to get infinite mana, but it's colorless, completely worthless and all copies of this card should be burned in a car fi-ALL HAIL THE GREAT LORD EGOTIST!

Anyways! No, this is bad, terrible, rubbish. Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir is much better for instant speed creatures, Leyline of Anticipation and Vedalken Orrery are both better too, even Winding Canyons is better.

I think people are forgetting that unlike Leyline of Anticipation and Vedalken Orrery, Metathran Aerostat gives you uncounterable creatures at instant speed. Plus, you can cheat him out with his own ability. Activate its ability with X = 4, then respond to the ability with another activation, where X is CMC of the creature you want on the board. Cheat out your creature, then use the X = 4 to play Metathran Aerostat. Since the Aerostat you're putting into play off the X = 4 activation is a different entity than the original Metathran Aerostat, it doesn't bounce itself back to your hand. In a multiplayer setting, Metathran Aerostat is actually better than Teferi, because Aerostat won't get you hated off the table for resolving it (unless you're about to win, in which case you're just another *** who thinks killing four people with an infinite combo makes the game more fun).

It's a cute card with the right deck. If your opponent attacks you, you can dump four shield sphere into play at instant speed, for just 4 mana. :) Since the "return to hand" part is part of the effect, not of the cost, you can play it several times a turn, in response to itself.
