Look at gilded lotus. This should have tapped for 3 mana of one color and had vigilance + haste. It is a Lotus Dragon for petes sake!

He's a bit underwhelming, yes, but he's more for show than anything. Lotuses are already thoroughly protected by their price tags.
In all seriousness, though, yes - I think he should be able to tap for three coloured mana, considering what lotuses do. Vigilance would also be good spider-sense, but not necessary.

Bah, I wonder what they were thinking with this one? It's not just poorly developed- it's bad design. Who wants to tap their 4/4 flyings for mana? If it tapped for like, 4 mana of any combination of colors, at least you'd have the choice of flying in 4 damage or getting a huge chunk of mana, but as is, it's just junk.
Art and flavor is cool, though.

They couldn't even make it produce three mana?

looks cool. should be able to tap for 3... wait then it would have to sack.l the other old lotus cards sack for three.
see black lotus
if i think about it it would be OK if it was uncommon it be OK. i remember seeing an uncommon 4/4 flyer for 6 mana in meroden besieged. it was a gargoyle. all this is doing is one more mana for an ability that gets you mana.
do not know why its a rare. it should be uncommon or common("If" they remake it it better be common, or maby, possibly uncommon!).
