Yea, you could counterspell if you're retarded. If you're not, you'll just pay the 2 mana and not use up a counterspell.

That said, this card sucks, though there is nothing strictly better... there are other options:
Tower Defense is a much better option... though it's in {G}
Shield Wall provides a smaller, more reliable boost without the condition.
Steadfastness gives the +0/+3 but is at sorcery speed..which kind of defeats the whole point of a combat trick
