"Ach Hans, run It's the Lhurgoyf"

One of my most cherished pieces of flavor text ever...

Goyfs and Atogs. Two families stemming from two age-old classics... And grandchildren of both of them wreck havoc in and beyond Standard.

The original Goyf.

One of the most iconic of all Magic creatures. Featuring perhaps the most meme-worthy flavor text of them all. Totally sick and brutal Pete Venters artwork (one of my faves next to Mark Tedin).

A winner from beginning to end.

To each with they own and beauty is in the eye of beholder.

I don't like this 'everything must fit the storyline' art we have now, but you've right there was very bad art in the old times (Celestial Prism anyone?). But it goes the otherway also, take for example Wrath of God, you just cannot compare the Alpha to Fifth version to the Seventh.

WoTC (or Hasbro) got greedy and told the artist that they must sell the rights to the art to them instead of getting paid by royalties.

The old cards vary from very bad to great art. Newer cards almost allways have at least good and quite often great art.
Art aside, the Lhurgoyf is great.

Lhurgoyf, the original goyf. To Volcre, the old cards have way better art than the newer cards by far.

This art for the Llhurgoyf looks insane. It's one of the few really old cards with art that I like...

Let me draw a comparison for you guys:

The new magic art is to old magic art as new star wars special effects and movies are to the old Star wars special effects and movies.

Checkmate. Checkmate forever.

"To Volcre, the old cards have way better art than the newer cards by far."

I disagree... somewhat. Magic has had tragic art failures in the past as much as it has it's tragic design failures. However, most of the abysmal artists responsible for the bad artwork have been replaced (Mark Poole, Justin Hampton and Fay Jones, off the top of my head). I think the art is held to a consistently higher standard nowdays. You can expect good results from newer artists like Aleksi Briclot and Jason Chan.

However, Magic no longer retains of few of their best artists: Richard Kane Ferguson, Harold McNeil, Anson Maddocks and Adam Rex. I think they were all victims of the new design policy of having more ***genized art. These artists all had a very distinct and stylized approaches to there work, and it doesn't fit in with the new policy. While recent cards feature many less blatantly ugly pieces of artwork, they lack the the overall variety and depth of some of Magic's best artwork fro... (see all)
