It's nice that the squire is a soldier and not a knight since it matches the flavor better and it's the standard 1/1 white token, though it's a little bit of disruption that makes it a little less keen for either dedicated soldier or knight tribal decks. I guess the way that it can be put in either one though is at least some sort of positive tradeoff.
Overall, I'm a fan of this card, because it's well designed, fairly costed, and steeped in flavor. There's a lot of interesting things you can do with this card, since it's flicker friendly and has all the benefits of getting two creatures from a single card. And though there's better white token makers out there, this is at least several levels better than Voice of the Provinces.
It's the kind of card I'd put in a commander deck. It's got some versatile applications that change depending on the board state, is not terribly threatening, and let's your opponents know that you have good taste in cards and not simply ... (see all)

I'm sad to not have pulled any of these in my fatpack.
As it has been said before, it really gives a nice Blade Splicer impression.
Although this may not be as impressive, I think that the fact of it being common and the creatures it brings to the table having more relevant creature type compensates for the inferior cost efficiency.

Awesome card! It's only 3 mana and not only does it have first strike, but the kick-a$$ laday comes with a soldier. I got it in a booster pack for M13, pretty kewl.

3 power spread over two bodies (with one getting first strike, no less) for 3 mana is awesome value, actually. It translates handily to virtual card advantage.
