Maybe more unweildy to read, but in fact it's a bit better than that. You could call it "first fight":
The damage doesn't happen simultaneously - your creature gets to hit first. And if it hits in a special way (e.g. with wither or death touch), it can alter the outcome from the targeted creature (like dealing less/no damage).
Also see the rulings of Karplusan Yeti, which works the same way.

On a big creature, this means "detroy target creature". EACH TURN, OR MORE.

Ulvenwald Tracker is better. You get an additional creature and can target any creature you control, for less mana as well.
