Why is this card not rated higher? Turn 1, any goober 1 drop. Turn 2, Dragon Fodder or Krenko's Command. Turn 3, you have a 10/10. Sounds good to me.

My friend played this with krenko, mob boss and dragon fodder and doubling season and rite of flame and empty the warrens. Guess how big it got.

That Devour 3 is PAINFUL in both ways. This guy is like thromok Junior. Sure, if you can get him down and let him eat some, he becomes powerful, but if he gets bounced or destroyed, you lose your investment.
That said, Doubling season and Token makers love this guy, but I'm sure they love his Dad Much better.

I love red cards like this. Like many red cards, it can seem relatively weak, but can come crashing into play out of no where and kill your opponent in a single blow. I always play this in a goblin deck with Emblem of the Warmind. It really makes my opponents think twice about attacking without an appropriate array of blockers

Sure, it's functionally "vanilla" when it comes into play, but... Devour *** 3. If this thing devours just one creature, it's already 4/4, I'd say that's pretty good. If it devours more...

Yeah this seems underrated to me also. This is the creature in my devour deck that gets huge, with eating just a couple of critters. :)

@VonDread - it's not rated higher because it's a 1/1 unless you give yourself card disadvantage. It's why most devour cards are underwhelming - because to actually get their upside, you need to invest into some card disadvantage. Admittedly, some of the better ones more than pay you back for it if they're allowed to live, like Mycoloth or Voracious Dragon, but this guy is just a vanilla creature that can get removed in a plethora of ways, leaving you at least 2 creatures down (this guy plus the one/s he ate).
If he lives though, and is allowed to connect, then sure, a 4/4+ for 3 is always going to be good. Most better decks would rather just play unconditionally good creatures though. ;-)

this thing is great in my local playgroup. in my mono red aggro, playing a few goblin arsonists/forge devils in turn 1 and 2 lets you get a 7/7 or 10/10 for 3 mana on turn 3, which is pretty damn good, whilst also dealing 2 or 3 damage which at that point is usually a board wipe for your opponent.

Lacks trample.
I don't want my opponent to have time drawing a response for this guy after chump-blocking for a few turns
when I've spent other creatures on this.
Haste might have helped as well, but would be a bit counterintuitive since you can't sacrifice your tapped out attackers after combat, like Spark Elemental.
Oh well. He might still do his job for some token decks.
And at least he's not Shimatsu the Bloodcloaked.
