I like this card. It comes in handy for my mono-green token deck.
A worthwhile bonus. If you're playing a Land, why not get a creature out of it?
Sure you could be just playing a 1/1 that only costs one green Mana though at the same time I like that it's an auto-plant token. There are plenty of uses for token creatures and that can't always be said about other non-token creatures you have on the battlefield.
Just as an example: If I play Jaddi Lifestrider...why tap my non-token creatures when I can just tap my abundance of tokens?
In any other green deck though...I probably wouldn't have this since I usually need immediate access to Mana.

Way good in the right deck. Free blocker, can be enchanted with Fists of ironwood, can be used with overrun.

For my first turn, I will play a forest. Then I will tap my forest. Then I will use my green mana to a 0/1 vanilla creature... essentially what you're doing. I suppose it's card advantage, however small that advantage might be.

Actually, this card is probably best in Polymorph decks; you get fodder for the Polymorph without having weak creature to risk hitting instead of your Emrakul. Its not bad in non-combo decks too, especially ones that don't necessarily need to be playing an on-curve spell on the first few turns.

@danagelh: Card advantage isn't "small" or "big." One card always equals one card. This is card advantage.
The plant token has many uses. Rancor is my favorite.
