He's not banned in commander.
He's banned as a commander in 1v1 if you play by the French rules.
But most people (at least in my playgroups) don't.
The consensus in our groups is that people who think that Back to Basics is degenerate and Fastbond isn't ought not to be telling others how to play Magic.

I ran this once in a three-on-three.
One ally was playing blue and must've blown at least four counterspells on stopping this bloke from biting it. He's just that good in matches with only two sides. In multiplayer he's fun because he doesn't make people attack you, just blast away at him.

@Salient Its not banned in Commander, its banned as a commander (for 1v1 at least). I play against a friend of mine with a very good Edric deck against Ertai which can have some explosive starts with Bitterblossom + Skullclamp or even Sorin/Elspeth with plenty of sweepers for Edric's hordes. Let's just say that only one connection is needed to put him too far a head (most games) for me to put him down. It's great to have power, but this little guy is overkill in 1v1, maybe even as a commander period!

People say Edric is unfun commander in 2-player EDH games. I will engage myself in a poetic exercise and paint a picture of the experience of going 1v1 against an Edric deck:
Vapor Snag.
At the end of the rules text, it also says "Draw a card".
They run 10 copies.
Part II
When is the earliest you start drawing 3 cards a turn every turn? Starting turn 3?
Where you using an Edric deck?
Part III
They have many counterspells. More than your Supreme Pizza and Decree of Pleasure- even if you run four copies of each.

Before you spend $20 snapping up a foil Edric for EDH, be aware that some playgroups will refuse to permit him. Edric is kinda sorta banned in Commander:

I don't get why Eldric is an unfun commander. The problem is people are greedy and want cards at little cost. Well, Eldric gives them that. For me personally, if I see Eldric as a commander I will focus on the person who chose him. Sure people come after me but at least when the Eldric deck wins I'm like "It wasn't my fault, you idiots followed the piper off the cliff!"
