Very odd how the Mirage print mentions that the spell must be "assigning damage," where the reprint and oracle mention nothing of the sort.

The oracle text usually follows the intentions of the last card printing. (They have noted that fifth edition printings sometimes have exceptions.) In Sixth edition, all sort of changes were made, to the game -- first edition to use a stack mechanic -- and existing cards. For example, before Sixth Edition your Flying Carpet would go down in flames with the creature using it, like most proto-equipment did. It's the only edition I know of where someone looked at existing cards, said "that's not nearly good enough," and rewrote them rather than print an updated version with a different name and text.

A 2/2 Flying for 4 mana is a little too much but then a... white counterspell? If it's possible targets weren't quite so narrow I think it would be much better, like maybe red or black instant/sorcery.
At best a cool sideboard option.
