I like how the version that requires you sacrifice the carpet has a higher rating than the errata'd printings XD.

Did they change its effect in the Oracle text? It doesn't make any mention of sacrificing it if the creature dies.

Yea, the art's a bit off. The Carpet shouldn't be depicted flying by itself, if it could fly without a rider it should be aa Artifact Creature with flying. Which brings up the question, what creature type would a carpet be?
