Equipment card before there was equipment. Outdated and bland now, but it was ahead of its time.

No it wasn't. There were lot of these tap/don't need to untap artifacts that gave boost to creatures in the early days. Nothing of being ahead of its time.
They evolved to equipment, but in a sense thay had to exist or we wouldn't have equipments.
