That's probably because it's actually art; and not just a visual depiction of the card's creature or the card's game-play effects. It's stylistic.

OH God, humor_love: you've said it better than I can! What lack in todays Magic art is style, something that let you recognize one card from the other just with a simple glimpse. Please Wizards! More art like this, in the future...!
