couple of key things with this card:

1. The ability triggers even if this creature is no longer in play at the end of combat. This allows gives it the chance to kill off a 1 toughness first striker.
2. The ability triggers for multiple creatures. If you had a lure on this guy, he would do 1 damage to each creature that blocked it, allowing it to deal more damage than a 4/3 creature would.

A decent creature. Pretty bad by today's standards, since we now get straight-up 4/3 creatures for this cost, but for the time it's not a bad limited card.
