They didn't have colored artifact tech back then, yet. But it's now blatantly obvious that Mirrodin Block would have been vastly improved, maybe even FIXED, if it had a few Sarcomite Myrs in it.
Affinity is dangerous to put on anything that doesn't have miminum colored cost- yet, you can't help feel that you'd really like to put 'Affinity for Artifacts' ON an artifact. Sarcomite Myr-type cards solve both those problems.
You could have a whole cycle of interesting 'Affinity for Artifacts' weak-bodied artifact creatures that require only 1 colored mana and do something mildly interesting but mostly just color-pie flavorful to represent how on Mirrodin, the influence of the Suns on artifacts results in nothing really being colorless....

Yeah, but even affinity cards were given more colored mana costs, Mycosynth Lattice is in the same set to come in and break them again
