You can activate this at the end of your opponent's turn, to free up mana for further attack preparations...

Can potentially be fairly threatening, and doesn't require much as an initial investment. Not great, but unlike Chimeric Mass, can be dropped turn one and cracked later for massive damage.

Chimeric Mass is way better, as it only requires a onetime large payment and doesn't die afterwards.

I suggest comboing it with some sort of global burn/kill spell like Wrath of God or Earthquake.

Or better yet, just turn it into a permanent 5/5 with Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. I suppose in the endgame you can still use the activated ability to pump him up past 5 power for the win.

best convoluted combo I can come up with:
coils + sol ring + dross scorpion + salvaging station: tap ring for 2, float 1, pay 1 to make coils a 0/0 and kill it, station and ring untap, return from yard, repeat until infinite mana and pump the coils
