Was there really the need of such an incredibly expensive entwine cost when the mana cost was already Shatter and Stone Rain combined?

Stone Rain is a Sorcery, it's more like the cost of Fissure an instant.
Land destruction as an instant isn't cheap apparently.

Really, even if the Entwine cost was {R} I doubt this would be used much. Now, if this was {2}{R}{R} with a {1}{R} cost, that might work.

On Mirrodin, mages who call upon the power of rust are shunned by their people and often turn mercenary to survive.
this is because these mages all cast terrible spells like this one and are stupid enough to rely on the power of rust
oxidize was a nice card, though

This is a perfect card when you need to destroy both a land and an artifact at instant speed for a CMC of 6RRR.
