The fact is that almost 100% of the time you will be bringing in a much more powerful creature than your opponent is. Super cheap recursion with a very minor drawback.

More like turn 1 Dark Ritual, Entomb/Putrid Imp, Exhume.

It s very powerful for a common .
Turn one dark ritual + buried alive
Turn two exhume and whatever you want with trample and haste ... And sure the opponent won t have something to bring back at this time ...

Even if your opponent does have something nastier in their graveyard than you do, you can see it and not cast the spell, making it much less likely to backfire than cards like Braids, Conjurer Adept or Hunted Wumpus. The only way this can backfire is if your opponent discards a gigantic creature in response to you casting it; theoretically your opponent can come up with instant-speed discard like Frantic Search or Tireless Tribe and end up with a free Stormtide Leviathan, Akroma, Angel of Wrath or something else to nullify whatever you put out, but the odds of that happening are minuscule... This is a stupid-powerful card.

Any card capable of delivering a turn one Iona (via dark ritual and entomb) should be forbidden magic IMO.
That is, banned in Legacy, where the format is eternal but nonsense isn't supposed to be given a free pass.
Actually, there are a few other cards that the same logic could apply to . . . and all of them are from either Mirrodin or Urza block.

"Looks like you get a Mogg War Marshal and I get a Pestilence Demon."
*troll face*
To state the obvious (that for some reason is unstated yet) black is the best at controlling graveyards on both ends. If you see fat fall in the opponent's grave and didn't bring anything for that... why not!?
