An instant responsive card that basically means you will automatically kill one of their swinging baddies when they thought they had it all? I'll go for that any day for just one white mana.

Vastly under-rated back in the day. Way back when, White had a single card to effectively kill a creature - Swords to Plowshares. Sure, Wrath would clear the board, but that may not have been the goal.
This overlooked gem also effectively killed any attacking creature for 1 white mana. Yes, it only worked on attacks and only if you had a blocker, but still it wasn't a bad card at all.
These days, White gets a common-level way to neutralize creatures (Pacifism, etc.) in each set, so a card like this wouldn't see print.

White has very few combat tricks relative to the vast number that other colors have. This one is a great addition to this number though, as it has great flavor, has a very VERY affordable cost, and is not overpowered or underpowered in any way.
Also, Hold the Line.
