Without you, Keeper Of The Light, this would have been the Sexiest 5-color cycle in Magic. But no. You had to go and ruin it. Damn you.

Synergizes with Sanguine Bond...NOT
But although it's arguably the worst of the five keepers, I think it's underrated.
The possibility to gain 3 life each turn for one mana - as long as you have less than your opponent - ain't that bad.
It might find some use in a weird deck that uses cards which profit from lifegain like Ajani's Pridemate, Cradle of Vitality or Well of Lost Dreams. Especially the last one can provide crazy card advantage.
Use cards that let you sacrifice life Wall of Blood (and fetchlands), or cards that give your opponent life like Wall of Shards to ensure your opponent has more life than you.
Try to build some sort of survival control deck that eventually finishes with some alternate win-con which doesn't care about your opponent's life total.
With all that walls you could possibly build some whacky defender deck with Perimeter... (see all)

if it gained you 5 life....that might have been tolerable....but it also would have made it playable.
the thing is, Lifegain is a defense ability. When it's playable, Control is playable.
When Control is what's best, Magic moves so far towards skill-testing that it -does- become less accessible to new players.
it's better for them to shift back and forth between Control being good and not good. When Control is Bad, New Players can pick up the game. When Control is Good, established players can enjoy the game. :)
when Midrange is all you got, that's like picking between Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus XP

You could use this in BW-deck that pays life for critters and effects so that you are almost all the time lower than your opponent. Black life gain (like Drain Life and Corrupt) is more suited for monoblack.
@NoobOfLore: Are you so noob of lore that you don't realise that all these keepers compare you with opponent before you can activate the effect?

Magic (in all of its "glory and splendor"), is like the family member who finds out what you're into, you know.. Finds out what you like and then THEME GIFTS the ever living S**T out of you!! Holiday after Holiday, year after year until one day you look around your room and see nothing but.. Idk.. Stinkin LIFEGAIN! And suddenly at that moment realize you HATE it and jump from the 4th story of your apartment complex just to get as FAR away from gaining life as possible.. lol. Dear Uncle Wizards: The fact you THINK I like to collect shot glasses does not AT ALL mean I want one from you every single birthday, Christmas and Easter until my room is full of em!! Do you want to make me nauceus?? (sp). Come ON. Let's give new traits to the color pie. I mean keep the old ones too, just take a short vacation from what we all know and get creative again! I know, I know, I'm asking for A LOT. Right, got it..
