This guy's actually really good for decks that use things like Unearth and Rise From the Grave (which are pretty much half the black decks in existence). You get a 4/4 for 3, and a 3 CMC creature for 1 or a 6+ CMC creature for 5. In fact, he's even affected by Unearth, which means you could play him, destroy him, then bring him back if you don't have any creatures in your hand. This guy facilitates resurrection very effectively on a body bigger than his CMC should allow. If I had a black deck, I'd definitely use 'em.

I always thought the horror was the cliff, like the asteriod from Star Wars, but now I see the angry giant rat/pig thing. This is an ok card, and one of the first I played with.

HOLY SHIT!
I thought it was the cliff too, but then I read your comment and looked again.
That is one well hidden pig monster!

This card has been around forever, and I JUST saw this guy thanks to the helpful people on the Gatherer.
I will never look at this card the same again.
Thanks, everyone.

Did they decide that Mercenary Knight was very very slightly overpowered, and needed one more black commitment? Even weirder, Portal lacked creature types, so this card was strictly worse than a card in the same block, printed immediately prior to it. Usually they avoid doing that.
