Unlike Ichorid, this guy's in Modern.

Turn 1: Play Swamp ; cast Cabal Therapy (or any other "target player" {B} cost discard spell) and discard Akuta, Born of Ash.
Turn 2: Sacrifice your Swamp to pull Akuta back to the battlefield.
Sets you back a Swamp, but you now have a 3/2 black creature with Haste. Not an entirely bad deal, considering it cost {B}{B} to play out.

Very very mediocre. Difficult to ensure you have more cards; causes tempo loss quite handily. Had it been "discard a card" and not had the conditional, he'd be bomb! He'd be a free 3/2, even if he had a sac effect (that'd be like a more interesting more balanced ichorid.)
@Lateralis
Costs you three cards and only works if you went second and they used 2-3 cards as well. Stick to dark ritual shenanigans if you want to blow 3 cards t1 on a vulnerable tactic
@Axelle
Ichorid is actually good, unlike this guy. Card advantage > tempo loss + card neutrality. The Modern Ichorid is probably Gravecrawler or Bloodghast.

@LateralisOne: Except that's actually a really bad deal. You're behind on a land drop and 2-3 cards in your hand in exchange for a 3/2 haste, which is definitely worse than their 3-drop (which they'll have out before you get a 2 drop) and its even worse than some 2 drops (Watchwolf) and sometimes can't even swing due to a 1 drop (Elite Vanguard and friends).
Probably one of the worst mono-black commanders (Haakon and Phage the Untouchable beat him at that, but not a lot else) as he's just a 3/2 haste for 4, a terrible deal, and his only other ability makes him want to stay out of the command zone.

I feel like, due to the Spiritcraft theme from this block, which only triggers when a(n Arcane or) Spirit spell is cast,
it should have been reworded to trigger it when you use his ability:
"At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have more cards in hand than each opponent, you may sacrifice a Swamp.
If you do, you may cast Akuta, Born of Ash from your graveyard without paying its mana cost."
This would have made this guy a whole lot more interesting. As it is, you'd want to play either Ichorid, Bloodghast or Nether Traitor instead - especially since two of them are spirits themselves.
He could have also been at least 3/3 easily, considering the conditional nature of his Wisdom-based trigger.

Well, look on the bright side, with all of those swamps you're sacrificing, you'll be less able to play the other cards in your hand, which means you'll be more likely to have more cards in your hand than your opponents, who are all playing their spells . . . which means you'll be able to sacrifice MORE swamps to bring him back again!
But wait, he has no evasion. Haste is nice, but he's 4 mana, whats a 3/2 with haste after turn 4? . . .
I know! I'll skip my turn 1 land drop and discard him due to maximum hand size on my first turn! Then, next turn, I'll play my swamp, sac it, and boom! 3/2 haster on turn 2!
As long as I never play any other spells, and fill my deck with unholy strengths, dismembers, and other one-mana black answers, I'll be unstoppable!

Seems like it would do really well in a Specter deck. Keep your opponents' hands minimized and keep bringing this guy back.
