I too can't see why this isn't more popular- exiling a combo piece for two mana? Sounds good to me.

Compare Distress- for the trouble of that white mana, Castigate stops Darksteel Colossus, Progenitus and the legendary Eldrazi from auto-recurring.

castiGATE was a perfect candidate for a reprint in GATEcrush... I see a missed opportunity here...

People seem to overlook the fact that not only does Castigate forces your opponent to REVEAL his/her hand, it also REMOVES the card from the game instead of just discarding it. That means the card of your choice gets no recur, no madness, no shuffle back into library. In addition to all that, you can plan according to their revealed hand.

Gerrard's Verdict is a powerful card as well but your opponent chooses which two to discard and they still has the chance to be retrieved later. Also, you cannot look at their hand.

I don't see how people would consider GV to be strictly better than Castigate.

Why the low rating? This card rules. Works best when combined with its robotic zombie child, Tidehollow Sculler. Five stars from me.

I used to run four of these in my Orzhov discard, then swapped them out for Tidehollow Sculler. Then they reprinted Duress, which is unfortunately no longer as good as it used to be (with Flashback still in circulation and important creature threats like Snapcaster Mage and Delver of Secrets. So I put Castigate back in, replacing Duress.
