This card is near perfection. Now while the cost to some people may seem absurd, in reality green decks have tons of mana accleration; which means this guy could easily be a 12/12 by turn four. His second ability is good, but mabye a little too expensive at 2 mana. The art work couldn't be better; seeing the soldiers of Bant get destroyed by one of Naya's most vicious creatures is awesome. But aside from all the good points about the Hydra, I must go on to explain the bad, which keep the card from being entirely perfect. First there is little protection from removal. Its obvious that burn spells won't even sting this guy, but everything from Terminate to Path to Exile will easily make all that mana investment vain. Seconly, the X cost prevents the Hydra from being played with cascade or reanimation combos effectively. Aside from the downsides however, Apocalypse Hydra is still an amazing monstrosity that will make your opponents quiver ... (see all)

I love how this is in the opening of the new Planeswalker game for 2012.
xD I wonder if their still going to have the Phryexian guys in their, but their controlled by Bolas now?
It seems like the flavor text is leaning for that.

I know how this only has sevel Heads
use 5 for the Variable Colorless Mana
then blow up three of his heads

7 mana for a 10/10, in the two best colours for mana acceleration, seems good enough to me. I don't think it's spectacular, but worth playing in a fair number of decks and especially in limited.

The second ability is more bonus gravy than a key part of the card. It's not essential, but it's certainly nice.

TIMMAY!!!1
Oh yes, the Timmy in me absolutely loves this beast. It's just so huge! And I found the pinging ability to be quite useful, actually. 4/5!

I got this card pretty early in this set, and there are many points that I can still agree with. First, the artwork is second to none, the only one to come close was Progenitus with the mist covered hydra. Second, the ability to play a giant creature, say 14/14 for about 9 is just EPIC, used to run it in a deck of mine, but only had 1 so it didn't prove as useful as I had hoped. Third, the ping ability is a bit costly yes, but with a few other things to use with it, like Gorgon Flail, Quietous Spike, or even Basilisk Collar it is just evil. Something I thought about implementing in a naya domain deck of mine is ping Child of Alara to death, while keeping him above 5, and paying 1 with Spearbreaker Behemoth (if you have it to spare) it sticks around to play and hit an unguarded opponent next turn, even if it is only for 6 less than when it came out. Overall I give it a 4.8/5

This card is pretty darn Epic.
I, for one, love the (non)interaction between CMC X and reanimation. You can make this plenty stupid with elves, and you don't need to zombify it to make it good. It's the scalablity of X, and the 'clearance sale' boost you get from paying 5 or more, that pushes this into the classification of cards that provide you yet another alternative way of making Big Stupid Giant Monsters Fast. I like Reanimating Akroma as much as the next guy- but I'd like it a lot less if that were the Only way to 'cheat' at mana curves. MTG is still cool because there's so much diversity in the card interactions and the kinds of decks you can build, and Reanimate and Elves can both coexist as valid deck plans for making Ginormuge Fatties waaayyy too early.

There's just one little quibble I have with this guy, and tbh it may have been unavoidable- I wish he'd been in either Shards of Alara, or Alara Reborn, but not Conflux. Or I wish that The Other Mythic R... (see all)

This card is one of those rare ones that is actually more fun to look at than it is useful. It's decent, sure, but look at that artwork. Wow.
