The official text has a tap symbol because for years all artifacts were considered "TURNED OFF" if they were tapped. Later rules changed this with a few exceptions for things like Winter Orb.

Yep, the oddness of the Revised Disk - comes into play tapped, yet doesn't require tapping to use its ability.

Anyway, the Disk is one of the greatest sweepers ever made!

The dread destroyer of worlds, the Mutually Assured Destruction card of Magic. If your opponent busted this out, you better hope you have a one turn answer.

Larry Niven's Disk was MONO artifact in A/B/U. Mono artifacts tapped when they were used and their abilities didn't shut down if they were tapped.

Poly and continous artifacts did shut down if tapped. Then Wizrds decided to get rid of the mono/poly/continous artifact distinction and said every artifact shuts down when tapped. So players started to play Mana Vaults with the new rules and Wizard didn't like.

So they retrofitted some poly/continous artifacts with the 'doesn't work when tapped' phrase and removed the tapped artifacts don't work rule. IMHO they should have gone back with the mono/poly/continous differetiation.

...Waaaaait, why did they add a tap symbol? The idea of being able to destroy everything, and put it on the stack more than once is just lulzy. No, you sure as hell don't need it. That doesn't make it any less funny. OH. Then it'd kill regenerating creatures...Wait, that almost seems like the point in the card. >.>

@Molly.Llama You always had to tap it to use it, it was originally printed as a Mono artifact which means that it has to be tapped to be activated. I agree with Tavaritz, I personally like the Mono, Poly, and Continuous system.

Good old disk... It's nice that you don't have to sacrifice it. That way you can use a boomerang or something to return it to your hand in response to its own ability. Or if you can animate it somehow, use some regeneration ability on it. Or with darksteel forge, use it each turn over and over.
