His abilities are all awesome. The first one isn't very interesting, but it helps the last one. The second one destroys with cat tokens.

It's completely weird to see a merely rare planeswalker before realizing that there weren't mythic rares in those days.
Anyway, pretty good card, although I prefer Ajani Vengeant. Vengeant's final ability is just that much more powerful. You can just Doom Blade the Avatar that this guy makes. However, it would be difficult to Doom Blade much of anything with no lands.

My first Planeswalker. I remember when Gilder Bairn came out and I first launched his ultimate. I don't think I've done it ever again, the -1 is just so good, especially in the set with all the Kithkin.

AG is an absolute monster in mono-white kithkin aggro decks; he pumps them (as if the deck type didn't have enough pump already) to ridiculous proportions, with vigilance until the end of turn to boot.
That's ridiculous in that type of deck. In fact, Goldmane is an extremely good card to have in any aggro white deck. Baffled at some of the "har har he only does life gain dood...lulz..." comments.
Very underrated planeswalker. He extremely good, it's just that he's very deck specific.

Flavorful and powerful. Where the first ability leaves something to be desired 2 life for free each turn is a good replacement for a damage shield. Planeswalkers are great flavorful cards and Ajani Goldmane is a good example of how cards should not be created for complete awesomeness but for situational integrity.

I am surprised that the first white 'walker is rated so low?
Though he may not be THE BEST Spike-y card, he is wonderfully white.
People have often looked down upon whites biggest skills (damage prevention and life gain) and the thing is: Life gain and damage prevention buys you time until you kill your opponent.
And let's face it, if played right, white plays the best attrition wars.
And his first ability gives a nice, comfy 2 life every turn. A very nice cushion.
His second ability allows him to play more aggressively, pumping even only one creature again and again creates a situation that quickly demands to be dealt with. Not to mention how amazingly well this ability's synergy with persist-y creatures (in block too!) . . . I'm looking at you Kitchen Finks!
His last ability brings back so many wonderful memories of Urza's days . . . though, obviously not as good, but an Serra Avatar is still a deadly beast to behold (even if... (see all)
