Well... He's not bad...
His power and toughness are high. Admittedly not high enough to completely dominate a field but hey.
Also, the additional cost to activate his ability practically means nothing.
During the battle phase it would be easy to make your creatures do a little extra damage every time one died.
Overall, he would make a nice contribution to a lot of decks I can think of. He is flexible but can still be build around, In my opinion the most important par in a card.

Base rating: ***
Manna cost vs stats: -*/2
Decent ability: +*
Final rating: *** */2
A pity his ability didn't cost just one less. It would have put the card at a solid **** possibly even **** */2

@Broccoli: why not do both, exactly? The Patriarch doesn't tap when you use his ability. You can do it as much as you want and still attack.

Utility creatures for 6CMC suck as MaRo described it when they were creating the Titans. When you summon it, it provides an agonizing choice of whether you use it for it's ability or if you attack with it's beefy body.

and then in his anger he throws creatures in his way at you.
But he's still pissed off and searching so he throws the corpses in his way at you
..then he finds his pills.
